Fo Guang Shan Monastery is a place that most tourists will visit when come to Kaohsiung, as you also saw many foreigners there yesterday.
Buddhism is one of the main religions in Taiwan, actually, it is not just a religion, it is more like a way of life. One student asked me, "are you a Buddhist?", Well, it is hard to answer this question. If you are a Christian, you have to be baptized and go to church every weekend. According to this standard, I am definitely not a Christian. Is there any criteria or ceremony to become a Buddhist ? In Taiwan, as far as I know, no such things. But I did hold incense to pay every day when I was a kid, and even now I did that on some big Taiwanese traditional festivals when my big family is supposed to show respects to ancestors and Gods up there. That is all. So, I believe Buddhism is more like a way of life, not a religion, teaching people to "do good deeds, speak good words, and think good thoughts".
